Herzlich Willkommen auf den Seiten des Arbeitsbereichs "Educational Data Science"

Educational Data Science (EDS) deals with the theory and practice of supporting and improving teaching and learning with the use of data. Nowadays, the use of data in everyday life as well as in education is unavoidable. However, the main goal of its use in education must always be to make learning and teaching more attractive, effective or efficient. If a data use does not achieve any of these three goals, it should be classified as unsuitable for the given teaching or learning situation. It is particularly important that the field of EDS is not driven by the mere existence or availability of data, but that it is always oriented towards the needs and concerns of the users. Only when different user groups with their interests and perspectives, as well as different research methods, are combined and considered together, is a holistic view of teaching and learning from and with data possible. Only then can research questions be formulated appropriately and suitable methods be selected to answer them.

When using data in education, ethical and legal aspects such as transparency, trust, rights and obligations of all parties involved, etc. must always be taken into account. When developing feedback mechanisms such as visualisations, it is also important to consider different aspects such as purpose, target groups, target scenarios, etc. and to then take these into account when evaluating the approaches pursued using quality indicators. However, the origin and development of the EDS technologies used, such as the further development of open source approaches, in-house development of applications or the setting up of infrastructures, etc., also play a role. The greatest challenges for research and implementation in the EDS field are therefore often not purely technical, but also social (i.e. organisational and didactic).
