Course at the Alfried-Krupp-Schuelerlabor: Should We Delete our Social Media Accounts right now?

Students at school use social media technology for many purposes in their everyday life. They are practical experts. At the same time, they are less familiar with the technical, economic, social and ethical or philosophical backgrounds that are to be explored in the workshop. For this purpose, argumentative and reflexive methods of applied ethics are used.

The normative assessment of the use of social media technologies is led by the question of computer scientist Jaron Lanier: “Should we delete our social media accounts right now?”. He lists ten arguments for doing so. These arguments are elaborated and examined in the workshop.

It is an aim of the project to enable students to acquire knowledge about social media technologies and to form their own judgement on the ethical questions about their use. The one-day-course at the Alfried Krupp-Schülerlabor (AKS) is open for ninth grade students or older. The workshop started 2022 and is offered on a regular basis.
