Student Representation

We represent your interests in various committees and bodies at the Institute, the Faculty, and Ruhr University Bochum. These include, for example:

Other Student Bodies

We also work with and represent students within university-wide student bodies, including:

Student Association vs. Student Council?

What is a student association?

As soon as a person starts a degree course, they become a member of that course’s student association – for the duration of their studies.

For example, someone studying Educational Science is automatically part of the Educational Science student body, and someone studying to become a teacher specialising in Mathematics and Educational Science is part of both the Mathematics student body and the Educational Science student body.

In principle, therefore, all students in a particular subject area make up the student association for that subject.

What is the student association council?

The student association council for a subject (abbreviation: FSR) consists of elected students from a subject’s student association who have the following responsibilities:

  • to represent students from that particular student association in various faculty and department committees
  • to act as a liaison between students and teaching staff
  • to advise and support students in planning their course of study
  • to plan and organise various information and social events

If you’re interested in getting involved in the Student Council, contributing your own ideas and helping your fellow students, you can stand for election to the FSR at the general assembly each semester!

Fsr Pride

What is the BuFaTa?

BuFaTa stands for Bundesfachschaftentagung (Federal Student Representatives’ Conference). It is a Germany-wide gathering of student representatives from a specific field of study. Students from various universities come together to exchange views, discuss current issues and develop joint positions.

The focus is on issues relating to studying, teaching, higher education policy and the work of student councils. The BuFaTa also offers the opportunity to get to know other student councils, share experiences and take away new ideas for one’s own work.

This time, we were at the BuFaTa in Potsdam for you from 28 May 2026 to 31 May 2026! We networked extensively, exchanged ideas and took away lots of new inspiration for our work in Bochum. Many thanks to the FSR EWI Potsdam!
