030083: Charles W. Mills' Critical Philosophy of Race (EELP, Gender Studies)
Wednesday 14-16
Start Date: 05/04/2023
Course Type: Seminar (in English)
As a pioneer of critical theory of race Charles Mills has significantly and multifariously contributed to the contemporary moral, political, and legal philosophy: from metaphysics of race, over his criticism of racial liberalism, to his theoretical efforts of decolonizing (or as he puts it, “de-ghettoizing”) of contemporary analytic philosophy. By studying and discussing of some of his major works, e.g., The Racial Contract (1997); Blackness Visible: Essays on Philosophy and Race (1998); Black Rights/White Wrongs: The Critique of Racial Liberalism (2017) and Black Radical Kantianism (2019), this course aims to give an overview on the main ideas and moves in Mills’ philosophy of race during his groundbreaking and prolific path. By using the prominent example of Charles Mills the course gives at the same a detailed introduction to critical philosophy of race.
