„Here I stand. I can do no other." „I (just) have to do this, I do not have a choice.“ – Such phrases imply a necessity of important decisions and actions. They refer to fundamental convictions or beliefs and can be regarded as existential expressions of a person’s character and identity. But they can also be considered as unjustified exculpations. One could ask: “Did you really have to do this? Did you consider all alternatives? Can you really know, what you have to do?”
How should expressions like “Here I stand, I can do no other” be interpreted? What is their explanatory or exculpatory power? What does practical necessity mean, in how far is it really ‘necessary’ – and for whom? Which dimensions of practical necessity can be distinguished? And what does it mean for our self-understanding and for our responsibility, if we are necessitated by such necessities?
Patterns of tragic necessity, aesthetic, narrative, as well as historical necessities play an important role in sociocultural interpretations of human life. Those patterns reflect our will to control contingency and luck. Kantian inspired philosophy (e.g. Christine Korsgaard) underlines the absolute and objective moral necessity of the categorical imperative, which is distinguished from the subjective necessity of hypothetical imperatives and related to the necessitation by moral law. Contrary positions defend the specific authority of a less rational personal necessity: For Bernard Williams such necessities and incapacities express our characters, they overrule moral obligations and they can point at a limit where someone would even have to ‘become another person’, if he was forced to an alternative action. For Harry G. Frankfurt our personalities necessarily have to be structured and shaped by the volitional necessities of love.
Different concepts of practical necessity imply different ideas about ethics, morality and about personhood and personality. The discussion about the dimensions of practical necessity will be related to discussions about the role of morality in human life, about the ideals of autonomy, authenticity and individuality, about freedom of the will and about different models of self-constitution, of personal identity and integrity.

Der "Health Impact Fund" stellt einen Vorschlag dar, wie Anreize für Pharmaunternehmen geschaffen werden könnten, um insbesondere die Entwicklung neuer Medikamente mit erheblichen Gesundheitsauswirkungen voranzutreiben. Dies würde in besonderem Maße Medikamente gegen Krankheiten wie Tuberkulose oder Malaria betreffen, zu denen arme Menschen derzeit nur unzureichenden Zugang haben.

On july 2nd, 2013 the Chair for Practical Philosophy and the Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities (KWI) in Essen host a workshop with Prof. Thomas Pogge (Yale University) concerning the „Health Impact Fund“. Thomas Pogge is Leitner Professor of Philosophy and International Affairs and Director of the Global Justice Program at Yale. His current research focuses on issues of justice, poverty and health. The "Health Impact Fund" is a proposed way of paying for pharmaceutical innovation. It would incentivize the development and delivery of new medicines by paying for performance. This could change health outcomes and the distribution of pharmaceuticals in both the developed and developing world.

Sabine Hohl is a PhD-Student in the Graduate Program "Ethics" at the University of Zurich. Her dissertation is dealing with the responsibility of individuals concerning collective caused harmes.
Ute Kruse-Ebeling is a Researcher at the Chair of Ethics and Aesthetics at the University of Potsdam. She is interested in classical and new approaches in ethics, in environmental philosophy and in phenomenology.

Marcus Düewell ist Professor für Philosophische Ethik an der Universität Utrecht. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen im Bereich der Begründung von Ethik und der angewandten Ethik in Verbindung zur ethischen Theorie und zur politischen Philosophie.

Thorsten Wilhelmy was born in 1973. Currently he is a secretary at the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin. He held jobs as a referee at the Cusanuswerk and as a referee at the German science council, before.

A lot of moral theories, especially those inspired by Kant, are pressuring the own well being or life satisfaction. Do we have to abandon central individual plans for our life (for example to become an artist) if these plans get in conflict with legitimate interests of others (like those of the own family)? Can such a person live a life with integrity even though this person is not satisfying moral demands all the time? Is it possible that human beings are contended even if they are acting very immoral? Can there be contended miscreants? Or is a virtuous life the only way to luck, like Plato and Aristotle thought? The workshop is finishing a research seminar on the topic and should especially give students the chance to get in contact with the invited researchers.
