Born in Bochum in 1963; married; three grown-up children.
Studied history, philosophy, theology, and educational science in Bochum, Tübingen, and Münster (1983-1990). Graduated with the First State Examination (1990).
From 1991 to 1996 research assistant at the Department of Educational Science at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster and doctorate in Educational Science on the subject of 'Subjectivity and Contingency' (1997).
From 1997 to 2003 research assistant at the Department of Educational and Social Sciences at the University of Münster and a habilitation in Educational Science on the subject of 'Education and Power' (2004).
From 2000 to 2001 Research Fellow at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium).
from 2004 to 2014 lecturer at the University of Bremen and responsible for the Department of Historical-Systematic and Comparative Educational Research in Faculty 12: Educational Sciences. From 2005 to 2007 Deputy Dean of Studies, from 2007 to 2011 Dean of Faculty 12.
Since October 2014 university lecturer at the Ruhr University Bochum and head of the working group “Theories of Education and Educational Science” in the Faculty of Philosophy and Educational Science. From 2015 to 2020 member of the institute management of the Institute of Educational Science, from 2018 to 2020 Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Educational Science at RUB and a spokesperson for the deans of all faculties as well as head of the faculty conference.
Member of various educational science associations (including DGfE and EERA). From 2007 to 2016, member of the speakers' group of the Commission on Philosophy of Education of the German Educational Research Association: from 2007 to 2012, deputy speaker of the commission, from 2012 to 2014, speaker of the Commission on Philosophy of Education and from 2014 to 2016, treasurer of the commission. From 2012 to 2015, member of the board of the General Educational Science Section (DGfE), and from 2013 to 2015 spokesperson for the General Educational Science Section.
Active as a scientific reviewer in various appointment and accreditation procedures, peer review procedures for various scientific journals, and reviews of research projects for various third-party funding bodies. From 2016 to 2020, he is an elected member of the review board 109 “Educational Science and Educational Research” of the German Research Foundation (DFG).
In addition to scientific activities, he did various training courses and activities in the psycho-social field, including counseling and crisis counseling, moderation and conversation, and psychodrama.
In 2004, he worked as a teacher at a private school in Münster.
