Admission:
Entry to this Master of Education degree programme requires a completed Bachelor's degree in the two teaching subjects as well as successful completion of the Teacher Training Profile (Profil Lehramt) offered by the RUB Optionalbereich or an equivalent qualification from another programme or university. Admission to the programme is possible in both the winter and summer semester. However, there are subject-specific prerequisites that must be met. The Master of Education Educational Science offers interdisciplinary preparation for the future professional field of teachers by integrating professional knowledge and opportunities for reflection on school as an institution, developments in the educational system, criteria of good teaching, prerequisites and effects of teacher behaviour, etc. The programme imparts basic knowledge in school pedagogy, sociology, philosophical-anthropology and teaching and learning psychology, and builds on the Teacher Training Profile in the Optionalbereich of the Bachelor’s programme. You will acquire the skills that are necessary for the development of professional competence in the areas of teaching, educating, innovating and assessing. Emphasis is placed on knowledge that is important for planning, implementing and reflecting on teaching. The content focuses on the topics of dealing with diversity and digitality in the context of teaching and learning processes. You will be able to set your own focal points of interest during the programme, especially in the compulsory elective area.
Teaching and learning takes place in small seminars, practical tutorials and lectures. This provides a good working atmosphere and opportunities for intensive exchange between students and lecturers. In some modules it is possible to choose the format of the end of module examination yourself.
In this Master’s degree programme, fundamental reflections on teaching and learning and educational processes, from the perspective of educational science, are combined with study elements directly related to the professional field and teaching methods. You will be given opportunities to develop an individual profile predominantly in the compulsory elective area.
In various modules, the genesis, structures, special features and characteristics of the German education system are reflected upon, as are issues related to planning and supervision of school-based teaching and learning processes for diverse learning groups. You will have opportunities to develop an individual profile in the section of the programme that offers modules in sociology, philosophical-anthropology and teaching-psychology. Special attention is paid to the use of digital media in teaching and learning.
The Master of Education degree programme Educational Science prepares students for the teaching profession at Gymnasien (grammar schools) and Gesamtschulen (comprehensive schools) in North Rhine-Westphalia. After successfully completing the programme, you can begin your teacher training. In addition to this career path, which is clearly oriented towards the teaching profession, there are also opportunities for working in educational institutions and organisations, in social services or in business. In addition, university and non-university research offers attractive employment opportunities as well as the possibility of a doctorate.
