The Master of Education Pädagogik programme, aims to prepare student teachers for a professional career teaching Pädagogik as a school subject. The programme will continue your academic training and expand it with subject didactics (teaching methods) that are specific to the teaching of Pädagogik as a school subject and in line with the requirements placed on teachers of Pädagogik.
The core element of the Pädagogik programme is the teaching practice semester, which is committed to the interweaving of knowledge and skills in educational science, subject-specific expertise and subject-specific didactic perspectives. In addition, the aim of teaching practice is to provide opportunities for observation of and reflection on the practice of teaching Pädagogik as well as trying out teaching methods in the classroom. The development of teaching-related observation and reflection skills during the practice semester is supported by a university-supervised study project. The development and testing of your own teaching projects is practiced in a preparatory planning seminar and supervised by the subject colleges on site as well as the subject leaders of the ZfsL (Centres for Practical Teacher Training).
In the interest of a meaningful interweaving of theory and practice perspectives, subject-specific didactic training takes place exclusively within the framework of seminars and tutorials.
The courses offer a good working atmosphere and opportunities for intensive exchange between students and lecturers.
In the area of subject-specific training, you can choose between different advanced modules on disciplinary and core curricular topics (such as upbringing and education, development and learning, and socialization), which build upon the introductory studies of the B.A. programme.
In the area of subject didactic training, basic knowledge of the framework conditions and problem areas of Pädagogik are imparted, as well as subject didactic concepts covering the thematic and methodological design of subject teaching. In the more application-oriented parts of the module, strategies for lesson observation, planning and development are developed and practiced using examples. In the development of lesson plans, special attention is paid to the consideration of diverse and inclusive learning situations as well as the goal-oriented and functional use of digital media.
The Master of Education Pädagogik as a teaching subject prepares students to become teachers of Pädagogik at Gymnasien (grammar schools) and Gesamtschulen (comprehensive secondary schools) in North Rhine-Westphalia. In other federal states, the subject of Pädagogik is offered only occasionally in the school curriculum. Teacher training with the subject specialism Pädagogik is therefore only offered in NRW in the first and second phases of teacher training (university/pre-service training).
After successful completion of the M.Ed. degree, you can begin teacher training. In addition to this career path, which is clearly oriented towards the teaching profession, there are also opportunities for working in educational institutions and organisations, in social services or in business. In addition, university and non-university research offers attractive employment opportunities as well as the possibility of a doctorate.
